    Christine Halvorson of Halvorson New Media, Peterborough, is staging a special presentation in October designed specifically to help authors--whether they are self-published, traditionally published, or planning to be published--sell more books. The 4-hour workshop will focus on using all of Facebook's features, as well as how to produce short, effective videos. The workshop runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Manchester's Nackey Loeb School of Communications. The classroom setting at this venue allows for hands-on learning, so participants are encouraged to bring their SmartPhones as well as their laptops. Facebook Live--the ability to broadcast live, streaming video through a Facebook Page--will be demonstrated, and participants will get a chance to do a practice run if they choose. The $75 admission price includes continental breakfast, a recording of the day's presentation, and access to an ongoing private Facebook group in which members discuss video challenges and receive ongoing mentoring. Facebook is here to stay, despite its recent problems. You and your book need to be where your potential readers are and, with rare exceptions, they’re on Facebook. Don’t chase shiny new objects You may need to be on some of the other sites also, but you won’t know for sure unless you take this workshop. Learn to be effective and efficient at using social media to gain an audience—an audience that may ultimately buy your book or at least come to your readings, signings, and other events. You’ll learn when and how much to spend on social media advertising, which really can fit into a writer’s budget. The Internet is exploding with videos. Yep, even you, the introverted author, need to put yourself on camera. Facebook loves video. YouTube can help you get found. You’ll want to think about creating your own commercials, trailers, storytelling sessions, tutorials, author events, and more. You’ll come away inspired, not intimidated. You’ll gain confidence and lose your skepticism. You’ll leave with enough information to make a social media marketing plan and you’ll know how to implement it.
